I didn’t take a picture though.
The first career book club was a quickly organized affair that I only managed to read the book for because I’d already read it when I announced book club. Nonetheless! Ursula, Crystal and I gathered at Teaism to talk about making thoughtful, deliberate career choices that will actually allow us to advance in our existing jobs and in longer-term careers. Ibarra recommends testing different approaches to your career, pursuing one interest at work, another in your free time, “crafting” a career out of the skills and opportunities you have handy. She also talks about your possible selves. Based on your life so far, what does your responsible self do? Your chuck-it-and-run self? The self that your parents want? The self that follows your wildest dreams? Once you’ve thought through some of that, what do you do with that knowledge?
The takeaway question, courtesty of Herminia Ibarra, was:
“Among the many possible selves that I might become, which is most intriguing to me now? Which is easiest to test?”
Your homework is to answer that.
Due to some scheduling stuff with our inaugural members, the next career book club will be September 27th at 6:30 p.m., location TBD. We’ll be reading Unfinished Business by Ann-Marie Slaughter, but if you watch the Vince Vaughn movie instead (15% on Rotten Tomatoes!) then I expect a full synopsis.
